Welcome to an exciting Colorado adventure
awaiting you and the children you are teaching!

Parents and educators searching for a creative way to teach Colorado history—and kids looking for some adventure—have a fun new option. Come! Explore Colorado offers detailed lesson plans for seven units of action-packed learning.

While this innovative curriculum brings together reading, writing, history, science, art, and Bible teaching, the most effective instruction takes place outside the classroom. Colorado’s museums, mines, monuments, caves, rivers, canyons—and of course its mountains—are at the center of each instructional unit. Children will see and experience their state in new ways as they learn about its rich history.

The first unit, Colorado geography, sets the pace for serious exploration— fossils, rocks, caves, mountains, mesas, rivers, canyons, and hot springs among many other things. Units on Indians native to Colorado, explorers, mountain men, and the gold and silver rush follow. Unit six covers Colorado’s statehood, including railroads, settlers and settlements, and cowboys. The final unit, the 20th century, brings the course to an end by challenging children to see how much the state has changed in the past 100 years.

Come! Explore Colorado is designed for fourth-grade students but is flexible enough to be used simultaneously with siblings or other children of any grade. The material can be used over the course of a year—focusing on a chapter a month—or condensed into one action-packed summer. Another option is to spread the units out across several months or summers. Teachers and students have the freedom to go at their own pace.

Through books available at your library, your children will travel back in time and find that history can be exciting when experienced through the lives of real people. These historical novels will capture their imagination and help them grasp what life was like in the early years of Colorado.

Add to that privileged access to a companion website with an extensive listing of books, teaching aids, resources, fields trips, and events, Come! Explore Colorado is everything you need to teach an exciting and adventurous year of Colorado history!
